Chiropractic Neurology

Since specializing in Neurology, Dr. Matthews has helped many
people who have "been everywhere and tried everything". While we
still treat "regular patients" who just need an adjustment, one of the
things that makes our clinic special is that we welcome patients who
are at the end of their rope, as their last resort. We often get great
results with these folks, too! Sometimes the examination reveals a
problem Dr. Matthews can help with, and sometimes it reveals the
need to refer to a medical specialty. In either case, the patient is
closer to getting rid of their problem. We refer to local medical
providers, or imaging like MRI (magnetic resonance imaging) when it
is necessary and appropriate.

Dr. Richard Matthews graduated from Parker College of Chiropractic
in 1990. He practiced chiropractic in Heber Springs Arkansas for
several years, before deciding to go back to school to learn
Chiropractic Neurology. This is a program of study leading to a
diplomate degree in Chiropractic Neurology, a specialty within
Chiropractic. More information about Chiropractic Neurology and its
founder, Professor Carrick, can be found by visiting
the Carrick
Institute Website.

Dr. Matthews works with patients who travel to this area as well as
local residents.  Some people come to him for an evaluation, to find
out what's wrong and what they should do.

How do you know when you should call Dr. Matthews?

-You've seen many doctors, but none have solved your problem,
diagnosed what is wrong with you, or explained it to you. Common
symptoms of problems that Dr. Matthews can help:

-migraines
-vertigo, dizziness, BPPV
-sciatica
-mood and behavior disorders like depression, ADHD
-Numbness and tingling
-learning and developmental problems
-many other neurologic symptoms

-You've been going to the chiropractor very regularly, but don't feel
like you are making any progress

-You have a complex problem that requires special care

-You want to get a second opinion for legal reasons; ie you've been
injured in a car accident and told " you're ok" but you know you're not.

Chiropractic Neurology is not a technique; it is a system of examining
and diagnosing the patient's nervous system, and deciding on what
type of care will provide the best result for that patient. This involves
a functional neurologic exam on your first visit-an exam that can find
which areas of the brain or nervous system are either structurally
damaged (from injury or disease) or functionally impaired. Then some
brief stimulations or mild treatments are tested, to see if it is possible
to bring about a positive change. These tests may look at reflexive
eye movements, balance and equilibrium, vision, or other types of
findings. All are painless and effective. At the end of this procedure,
Dr. Matthews will explain what he sees is wrong, how that is causing
your problem, and what has to be done to help that problem. If yours
is not a problem that Dr. Matthews can help, he will tell you that. We
refer out for MRI studies or medical evaluations and treatment, when
it seems evident that is what is best for the patient.
